The biggest Estonian ski marathon breaks records (0)www.expatsnet.net 12.02.2010 20:31  The biggest Estonian ski marathon Tartu Maraton has more than 6400 registered participants from 22 countries by now which is the best result in more than twenty years. The numbers have risen constantly in recent years showing the growing popularity of long distance skiing. The start for 39th Tartu Maraton in Estonia will be given on next Sunday, February 21st. The organizer of the event is Club Tartu Maraton. The Race Director Indrek Kelk confirms that organizers are ready to host up to 6500 skiers so there is little room left. "The race course in Southern-Estonia is in very good condition since we have had cold weather for about two months by now. The tracks are ready for both top skiers and people, who just want to enjoy beautiful snowy winter with their friends and family," says Kelk. Start for 39th Tartu Maraton main course (63km) on February 21st will be given in Otepää Tehvandi Sport Center Ski Stadium. The same place held Viessmann FIS World Cup Cross Country Otepää stage in January. Finish is waiting skiers in Elva, Tartumaa Tervisespordikeskus. The course runs on diverse and beautiful landscapes of Southern-Estonia. The last three winners of Tartu Maraton are Anders Aukland from Norway (2009), Jerry Ahrlin from Sweden (2007) and Stanislav Rezac from Czech Republic (2006). On this year the 50th anniversary of Tartu Maraton is celebrated. The first Tartu Maraton was organized in 1960. Tartu Maraton is also a member of the Worldloppet since 1994.
